June 27, 2002: Bartolo Colon traded by the Cleveland Indians with Tim Drew to the Montreal Expos for Lee Stevens, Brandon Phillips, Cliff Lee, and Grady Sizemore.
On June 27, 2002 the Expos were 6.5 games out of first place (Atlanta was in first) and 5 games out of the wildcard. The Marlins and Mets were each within 2 games of tieing or overtaking the Expos for 2nd in the NL East.
Interim GM Omar Minaya, in a bid to make the Expos more competitive lands a big fish in the form of Bartolo Colon. Colon still had over one year left on his deal, but to the Expos was little more than a rental player.
Despite Colon delivering a 10-4 and 3.31 era in 17 starts for the expos, this is a deal i believe Nationals ownership likely wishes did not happen.
Lets look at what has happened since the deal.
2002 Expos finish 83-79. 19 games behind first place Atlanta in the NL East and in 6th place for the NL Wildcard.
Colon: Was moved in January of 2003 to the Chicago White Sox for Rocky Biddle, Orlando Hernandez, Jeff Liefer, and cash.
Brandon Phillips: Well on his way to his 3rd straight 25 homer, 25 steal campaign.
Cliff Lee: After several up and down years is sitting pretty with a 10-1 record and a 2.55 era (which is admittedly on the rise)
Sizemore: A two-time all start who often is near the top of baseball in runs scored. Is a 30-30 threat every season.
